I'm trying to backup my availability group in SQL Server 2016 using DPM 2016, but after I add the cluster in DPM, availability group show nothing to back up. I've set every secondary node to be readable secondary and add sysadmin role to \SYSTEM user. How can I fix this?

Solved by updating DPM to rollup 15

Problem with synchronization points

Hi,

I have a problem in DPM 2016, i have backup for multiple databases with the settings:

Short-term Recovery: 5 days | 60 minutes synchronization
And full backup at 20:00 every day.

I have the setting that if i create a new SQL-Database DPM will find it automatically and start creating backups in the same protection group. But sens some months a go "new" added databases are just going for the Express full backup and the short-term are skipped. If i manually do a consistency check a new checkpoint are done. And if i check under Monitor > toady's jobs i will see that it's only scheduled for the full backup.

Thank you!

no synchronization point for database

I have changed recovery model of A database from simple to full and removed that database from DPM protection group and re-added it again. Then again observed that no log backup for that database. After that I completely removed the protection group and recreated it. But still no option of synchronization frequency. What should I do ?

Is hyper-converged Storage Spaces Direct SQL 2016 cluster a supported scenario for a protected server?

I am in the process of setting up and testing a hyper-converged 2 node SQL cluster.  I was burned a few months ago on a separate project when I found out that SCDPM doesn't support Cluster Shared Volumes for SQL after I moved a production system to it.  Since Storage Spaces Direct is built on CSVs, does that mean that SCDPM doesn't support it as well?  I assume that is the case.  If so, are there any other backup solutions (Azure Backup Manager or third-party) out there that do support SQL on CSVs and Storage Spaces Direct?

DPM - Service account?

Hi there,

I'm using DPM 2012 w/ SP1 and am trying to back up some SQL databases. I installed the DPM Agent to one of the SQL servers as the SQL Service Account but am still getting the error "user does not have sysadmin rights". I have looked in the SQL Management and can confirm that the SQL Service Account is a sysadmin. Is there a way of finding out which account is trying to run these backups?

Thanks!

Problem to backup Database SQL in SIMPLE mode

Hi guys,
I have a problem with protection of SQL DB.
My Database  is configured for use SIMPLE mode, but DPM try to backup the DB as if setting is FULL mode.
At any hour DPM try to create a DB recovery point but this process is failed with this error:

"Execution of SQL command failed for SQL Server 2012 database xxxxx\<nome DB> on <server SQL> with reason : BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.
The statement BACKUP LOG is not allowed while the recovery model is SIMPLE. Use BACKUP DATABASE or change the recovery model using ALTER DATABASE.
. (ID 30173 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D18)"

I have tryed to:
1) remove the DB from protection group and re-add the db
2) Set DB to FULL end return to SIMPLE
   Set DB to FULL
   Remove DB from protection group
   SET DB to SIMPLE
Re-add the DB to protection group

But nothing of this resolve my problem.

Thank tou for any idea.

Protection Group creation does not list SQL

Hi,

I have implemented SC DPM 2019 and am trying to setup backup for SQL2017RTM named instance (on Server 2019 cluster).

I have installed the agents on the 2 nodes and added NT AUTHORITY\System to the sysadmins role.

When I go in to create a protection group I cannot list SQL anywhere.  I get the nodes and the Windows Cluster name (no SQL cluster name).  I can expand on the nodes and am able to select "All Shares", "All Volumes" or "System Protection".

I get nothing when I try to expand the Windows Cluster name.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the agent to no avail.  I have also disabled the firewall on both nodes.

Kind regards

Shane

What are the permission required at Client SQL server side to configure backup in DPM 2019

I am planning to start SQL DB backup by DPM. I am logging in DPM server with my domain Admin account ARIF which has DPM Admin rights and other file servers backup is running ok.

1. What is permission required at client SQL DB to start backup?

2. Do  I need permission at each SQL DB?

3. Suppose I take online backup of SQL DB 2012 and I restore it at SQL DB 2016, will this create problem?

4. Do I need any special permission at there server where I am planning to restore it. FYI, have already installed MS SQL 2016 setup and created a default instance.

I have configured Backup of Vcenter SQL DB. VMware vcenter server and its DB are at two different server. I have configured backup of Vcenter DB. Backup is running perfect and no consistency problem. But recently, No one is able to login in vcenter and even portal is not accessible. So

1. is there anything that happened because of DPM?

2. Is it something like during backup process if someone would access vcenter portal (vcenter DB), will it be courrepted?

3.  Does DPM lock the DB before proceeding backup?

VM or SQL backup or both?

$

Hi

Very general question but what is best practice? To back up the VM or the SQL data on that VM... or backup both VM and SQL at the same time? But I believe both is just effectively backing up your data twice?

Thanks in advance.

SQL DB backup is successful but logs size are same and increasing

I am using MS SQL DB and we have many DBs there like vcenter and other DB. I have configured full backup for DB which is running successfully without any issue.

1. But even backup is successful, SQL DB logs are not purged and same size?

I want to shrink/reduce the SQL DB log file (ldf) size. I have changed recovery model from simple to FULL but no luck

DPM restore to alternate SQL server with Instance

$

Hello all,

I'm having real trouble figuring out how to restore an SQL backup from one server to another SQL server (with a named instance) using Azure Backup Server.

I am able to

$PGroup = Get-DPMProtectionGroup -DPMServerName "DPM SERVER"
$PObjects = Get-DPMDatasource -ProtectionGroup $PGroup[0] | Where-Object {$_.Name -eq 'DBNAME'}
$RPoint = Get-DPMRecoveryPoint -Datasource $PObjects[0] | Sort -Property RepresentedPointInTime -Descending | Select-Object -First 1

I get stuck on this line

$ROption = New-DPMRecoveryOption

Can someone help me figure out how to put this line together with the following variables?

SQL1 = Original SQL Server

SQL2 = New SQL Server for restore

INSTANCE = Instance name on SQL2 (i.e. SQL2\INSTANCE)

I want to restore it to the same DB name on the new server.

Thank you

M

Hi There,

Got several SQL servers being backed up by DPM2019 (now RU2) :-)

It is something to do with Mountpoints ? it seems to be zero bytes...Can anyone elaborate ?

The SQL log backup job has detected a discontinuity in the SQL log chain for SQL Server 2014 database database

All,

Getting the above error backing up SQL..

"DPM tried to do a SQL log backup, either as part of a backup job or a recovery to latest point in time job. The SQL log backup job has detected a discontinuity in the SQL log chain for  SQL Server 2014 database database Server\model since the last backup. All incremental backup jobs will fail until an express full backup runs. (ID 30140 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D11)"

SQL incremental backup job is failing again and again -DPM 2019

I am using DPM 2019 for SQL protection. But since the time, I created protection group, it is failing. Error is as below

Error:

Recovery point creation jobs for SQL Server 2012 database S300M\DBMaintenance on s300m.abc.com have been failing. The number of failed recovery point creation jobs = 5.
If the data source protected has some dependent data sources (like a SharePoint Farm), then click on the Error Details to view the list of dependent data sources for which recovery point creation failed. (ID 3114)

DPM tried to do a SQL log backup, either as part of a backup job or a recovery to latest point in time job. The SQL log backup job has detected a discontinuity in the SQL log chain for  SQL Server 2012 database database S300M\DBMaintenance since the last backup. All incremental backup jobs will fail until an express full backup runs. (ID 30140 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990D11)

Recommendation :

If you see this failure as part of a backup job, then in the Protection task area, select the SQL Server database and click Create recovery point. Choose express full backup. Alternately, you can wait for the next scheduled express full backup to run.

If this failure occurs as part of a recovery job, then try to recover from another point in time.
Review the Application Event Viewer logs on the computer running SQL Server for more details.
Ensure that this database is not already protected by another backup application.

DPM 2019 installation issue connecting to SQL 2019

$

Hello,

I am attempting to install DPM 2019 on a new virtual machine with Server 2019. I have installed SQL 2019 locally. I have created a domain account, "sa_sql_dpm". I am running the DPM 2019 setup as Administrator, but I get an error:

So let's walk through these:
1. I'm RDP'd into the computer, so yes.
2. I followed the steps as listed to create a firewall rule, but for now, I've disabled the firewall.
3. I've tried with both my AD administrator account and the sa_sql_dpm account. I have added sa_sql_dpm to the local Administrators group on the server, as well as assigning it the "public" and "sysadmin" Server Roles in SQL Server Management Studio. It also has User Mapping to "master" and "msdb". The domain admins group also has these settings.
4. This service is running, set to automatic, logging in as Local System.
5. SQL Server Configuration Manager -> SQL Server Network Configuration -> Protocols for MSSQLSERVER -> TCP/IP = Enabled.

I'm no DPM or SQL expert, but I think I've checked everything and I'm still dead in the water. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Zachary Hamilton

Why would my DPM replicas be inconsistent on SQL databases that I have just protected?

$

Hello,

I have a new SQL cluster running Server 2019 and SQL 2016.  I also have a second file server cluster running Server 2019 that I've set up a number of shares on.  Finally, I have a new DPM server running Server 2019 and DPM 2019.  DPM has been linked to an Azure Vault.  All of the above are VMs.

I have created a Protection Group that backs up to a local disk and the Azure Vault, and I tagged the local DPMDB to be backed up in this group, and that seems to be "OK".

Now I've installed the DPM client on both SQL servers in the cluster and both servers in the file server cluster.  I added the SQL cluster name and the file server cluster name to DPM.  I am backing up SQL databases via the SQL cluster name, and I am backing up the file server cluster via the cluster name also, backing up the G: and U: drives.  I'm getting errors that "Replica is inconsistent" and "Online recovery point creation failed".  Based on past experience with our old DPM server, I'm guessing if I clear up the first error, the second one might also disappear.

Usually, I just run the sync job with consistency check and that fixes it.  If it doesn't, I delete the item from the protection group and re-add it.  Neither of those is working, and as I said, these are brand new servers.  The error is:"Failure occurred while adding one or more of the volumes involved in backup operation to snapshot set. Please check the event log on SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER).MYSQLSERVER.domain.net to troubleshoot the issue. (ID 30290 Details: Internal error code: 0x809909E2).  Unless I was looking in the wrong log, I went to the SQL server and there was nothing in the Event Log for the time period.

I am a jack-of-all-trades System Administrator, and I don't have a lot of experience with either SQL Server or DPM.  Google hasn't been incredibly helpful as far as things to try or logs to look in for info.  I'm hoping somebody can give me a little guidance.

Thanks,

Zachary Hamilton
